Applying Meditation Principles At Work

In April this year I started a job at City of Cockburn as an asset management engineer. After my volunteering at Mandurah Meditation I noticed a huge difference. By working with other people also doing the meditation that has changed my life, it has completely shifted my perspective from attachment to specific tasks to having a broad vision.

My manager at City of Cockburn gave me the opportunity to do an IPWEA Professional Certificate in Asset Management, which I am deeply grateful for. Thanks to the broad mind developed by meditating and volunteering at Mandurah Meditation, I was readily able to accept the principles taught in the course. The biggest one that stuck out for me was to not get bogged down in detail, which is exactly what I was doing before, and instead to focus on the key messages to present to Council and the broader community.

What also stood out for me were the three goals of asset management:

  • Value - identifying what the customer values before how to deliver it

  • Alignment - achieving organisational alignment on how to manage assets

  • Leadership - asset management stewardship being led from the top

Without even needing to understand what asset management is, this actually matches well with the meditation:

  • Value = Living

  • Alignment = Coexistence

  • Leadership = Enlightened people who are able to share with others how to enlighten - to how to live and coexist

By sharing what we have gained through meditation with others, we empower others to do the same

When we learn how to help ourselves, we also can learn how to help others. This is true happiness. Whether by volunteering at a meditation centre or simply being the best version of yourself, you have the power to change the world, one person at a time.
